Pilot watches have evolved, incorporating a sleek, stylish, and dressy aesthetic without sacrificing the original concept. Our new favorite brand is AVI-8, seeking to honor with their timepieces both the aircraft and the untold story of the airmen who have dedicated themselves both in and out of the cockpit to bring these incredible machines to life.
While we have covered a list of the best pilot watches for every budget, we want to focus here on one particular brand that we love and own quite a few great watches from: AVI-8.
AVI-8 is a UK-based company, creating beautiful pilot watches, ranging from minimalistic watch designs to more ‘complex’ models featuring chronographs and even moon phases, all inspired on historic aircraft.
The company did a fantastic job marketing their watches and brand through social media, such as their Instagram account.
AVI-8’s collection of timepieces seeks to honor both the aircraft and the untold story of the airmen who have dedicated themselves both in and out of the cockpit to bring these incredible machines to life.
Their different models are all inspired by a particular model of aircraft, ranging from the Hawker Hurricane to the iconic Lancaster Bomber. Every timepiece is crafted to resemble one specific aircraft type, with beautiful details on the front and back of the watch. You can definitely notice these watches are made with extreme attention to detail, just like the aircraft and times they represent.
One example is the beautiful backplate illustrations on each model, such on this Flyboy Lafayette model:
Every watch comes in a luxury watch box to emphasize the quality and style of each model. Receiving a package in your mail that looks like this just instantly brings a smile on your face.
Whether you’re looking for your first watch, an addition to your collection or just a beautiful gift to your father or a loved one, AVI-8 is a great place to start.
This is my personal favorite, one I wear practically every day.
The classic aviation inspired chronograph. Classic case shape lines house detailed dials, colours, and graphics that celebrate the spirit and adventurism of an era gone by. Straightforward hour indexing, bold hands, and detailed vintage designed subdials of the chronograph are all blended to create a timepiece that is elegant in design, precise in performance and stylish in its comment on the wearer. Strapped with a genuine leather strap that is both dressy yet casual, this is a timepiece that nods to chivalry and performance.
Named after the Rolls Royce powered Avon turbojet engine that powered it, the AV4064 is the latest installment of watches inspired by the iconic Hawker Hunter aircraft.
A cockpit inspired multi-layered dial is replete with design cues and inspiration taken directly from the Hawker Hunter. Bold skeletonized “fleiger” hands are modern in concept yet familiar in function and style and rotate across the dial with clear luminous baton markings and tachymeter readout on the inside tension ring.
Strapped to the wrist with a vintage-inspired hand-stitched leather strap, this is a wearable, functional and remarkably detailed piece of watchmaking.
Drawing inspiration from perhaps some of the most influential engineers in military aviation history, AVI-8 imagined a watch that for all seasons and conditions would be worn by the Flyboys of the 20th century. Their exploits, bravery and rakish flair continue to inspire our work and ideas.
The Hawker Harrier “Jump Jet” found service across several air and naval air forces during the latter half of the 20th Century. It represented a breakthrough in avionic design and went on to serve many missions with distinction.
To pay tribute to the many variants of this famed jet, AVI-8 introduced several versions of their Harrier chronograph family, each inspired by a different country that flew this airplane.
