I first became aware of aircraft when I was 4 and we were going as a family to see an air display in Southern Rhodesia. On the way there we could see Tiger Moths doing aerobatics - some in formation and then a pair took off with a tether between their wings. After a few minutes they touched and one crashed - no fatalities but one pilot was injured. I was hooked! Ever since then I have mostly preferred being up there rather than down here!
