The 9 Best Online Ground Schools for Private Pilots in 2026

27 September 2023   |  Updated on October 16, 2026

Before your first checkride you need to pass the FAA Private Pilot knowledge test, and for that you need ground school. The good news: you no longer have to sit in a classroom on weekday evenings. A good online ground school teaches you the same theory at home, at your own pace, and gives you the endorsement you need to take the test.

The bad news: there are a lot of courses, and they are very different. Some are 40-hour deep dives, others are 15-hour test-prep courses. Some give you lifetime access and a pass guarantee, others expire after a year. Below we compare the 9 best-known online ground schools for the FAA private pilot certificate, with prices and terms checked in October 2026.

Our quick picks

How we picked these courses

We went through Rod Machado’s complete course ourselves for our in-depth review. For the other courses we compared what matters most to a student pilot: how much content you get, how the material is taught, whether the knowledge test endorsement is included, how long you keep access, what happens if you fail, and the price. All prices and terms come from the providers’ own websites and were checked in October 2026. They change regularly, so always check the current offer before you buy.

Some of the links below are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never decides the ranking: a course has to be good for student pilots to be on this list.

The 9 best online ground schools for private pilots

1. Rod Machado’s Private Pilot eLearning Ground School

$279.00

Best for: student pilots who want to truly understand the material, and future professional pilots.

Rod Machado’s 40-hour course is the most complete online private pilot ground school on the market, and our top pick. Its 26 highly animated modules cover roughly what you would get in a semester-long college ground school. What makes it special is Rod himself: he wrote, illustrated and narrated the course, and his humor makes even weight and balance enjoyable.

The course includes more than 1,200 FAA-style questions, the knowledge test endorsement and four eBooks (handbook, workbook, How to Fly an Airplane and Plane Talk). According to Rod, it meets the 2026 ACS, and you keep access for life.

The downsides: it takes longer than most alternatives, it does not track your scores or tell you when you are ready, and there is no pass guarantee. Refunds are only possible within 10 days if you have not downloaded anything.

  • 26 modules, 40+ hours of video, 1,200+ practice questions
  • Knowledge test endorsement and four eBooks included
  • Lifetime access
  • Price: $279

$249.00

Best for: students who want a modern course with a strong safety net.

Pilot Institute’s course has 540+ short video lessons (about 35 hours in total) and one of the best guarantees in the market: if you fail the knowledge test on your first attempt, you get your money back plus $175. There is also a 30-day money-back guarantee. To get the free endorsement, you complete 100% of the course and score at least 80% on two timed practice exams.

The extras are generous: an 800+ question test bank, a flashcard app, a 44-page study guide, offline downloads, live office hours with a flight instructor and a free maneuvers course. Pilot Institute reports a 99.9% pass rate for its students.

$299.00

Best for: students who like to study on the couch, on a tablet or on the go.

The course combines HD video lessons from several flight instructors with a 1,000+ question test bank, and includes the knowledge test endorsement.

Sporty’s guarantee is unusual: if you don’t pass all three tests (the knowledge test, the oral exam and the flight test), you get a full refund. Access never expires, and updates are free.

  • Video lessons plus 1,000+ question test bank
  • Apps for phone, tablet and TV
  • Endorsement included, lifetime access

You get the endorsement for free once you complete the course and score at least 70% on three practice exams. If you fail the test within a year of purchase, King Schools refunds your money and you keep the course. In April 2026, King also launched a more complete Private Pilot Course for $349.

  • About 15 hours of video
  • Endorsement included, lifetime access
  • Money back if you fail within a year

Ground school or test prep: what do you need?

Not every course on this list does the same job.

  • A full ground school (like Rod Machado or Pilot Institute) teaches you all the theory you need as a pilot: aerodynamics, systems, weather, airspace, navigation, regulations and decision-making. It prepares you for the test, but also for your flight lessons and the oral part of your checkride.
  • A test-prep course focuses on the questions and topics that appear on the knowledge test. It is faster, but you learn less.

Test prep works well if you already know the theory, for example from a classroom course or because you fly gliders or ultralights. If you start from zero, a full ground school is worth the extra hours. You will need that knowledge anyway once your instructor starts asking questions during your lessons.

Online or classroom ground school?

Many flight schools and flying clubs still offer classroom ground school. It gives you a teacher to ask questions and a fixed rhythm, which helps if you struggle to study on your own. But classroom courses are usually more expensive, run on a fixed schedule and are not available everywhere.

An online course costs a few hundred dollars, lets you study whenever and wherever you want, and you can rewatch every lesson as often as you like. You need some self-discipline, and you will have to save your questions for your flight instructor. For most student pilots who combine flight training with a job, online is the more practical choice.

How to choose: 5 questions to ask yourself

  1. How do you learn best? If you learn from video and stories, pick a video course like Rod Machado, Pilot Institute or Sporty’s. If you prefer reading, Gleim or ASA may suit you better.
  2. Do you want depth or speed? Rod Machado and Pilot Institute go deep. King Schools and ASA get you to the test faster.
  3. How important is a guarantee? Pilot Institute, King Schools, Sporty’s, FLY8MA and Gleim all offer some form of pass guarantee. Read the conditions carefully.
  4. How long do you want access? Most courses give lifetime access. Gleim (12 months) and ASA (24 months) do not. Lifetime access is useful for flight reviews later on.
  5. What does your flight school use? Ask your instructor. Some schools have a preferred course, and some want to follow your progress (Gold Seal makes this easy).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private pilot ground school cost?

Online ground schools for the FAA private pilot certificate cost between about $160 and $400. Most of the popular courses cost between $249 and $299. A classroom course at a flight school usually costs more. Ground school is only a small part of the total cost: see our breakdown of how much a private pilot license costs.

Is ground school mandatory?

Under Part 61, the FAA does not require a minimum number of ground school hours. What you do need is an endorsement from an authorized instructor saying you completed a ground training or home-study course and are prepared for the knowledge test. The courses on this list provide that endorsement. Part 141 flight schools follow an approved syllabus that includes at least 35 hours of ground training.

How long does online ground school take?

That depends on the course and your pace. Short courses have about 15 hours of video, the most complete ones more than 40. With quizzes and review included, most students need a few weeks to a few months.

Are online ground schools as good as classroom courses?

For learning the theory and passing the knowledge test, yes, as long as you are disciplined enough to study regularly. A classroom course has the advantage of a live instructor, but a good online course explains things just as well and lets you rewatch the hard parts.

When should I take the knowledge test?

Ideally before or during the first part of your flight training. Once you pass, you have 24 calendar months to pass your checkride. Our guide on how to take the FAA private pilot knowledge exam explains the whole process.

Can I use these courses for an EASA PPL?

Only as a supplement. These courses are built for the FAA system. Aerodynamics, weather and systems are largely the same, but European regulations, airspace and the EASA theory exams are different, so you will still need an approved EASA theory course.

Our recommendation

If you want one course that teaches you everything properly and keeps you entertained, choose Rod Machado’s eLearning Ground School. If a pass guarantee matters most to you, Pilot Institute is an excellent alternative. Whichever course you pick, the most important thing is that you finish it and understand the material. You will use that knowledge on every flight.
